Unlike the Incas or most other native South American peoples, the Guaraní (at least in this part of the world) successfully defended themselves against the military aggression of the Conquistadors. They maintained their own territory. This was at least in part due to their accepting the protection of Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries. This picture was taken around 1900 at the mission of Rosario del Ingre, just ten kilometers from present-day Imi.
