But the Guaraní occupied land that was, if not completely without evil, much coveted by the new South Americans. Skimishing went back and forth for centuries until, in 1892, at a place called Kuriyuki, a small contingent of the Bolivian army massacred 6000 quereimba in a single confrontation. (The "Bolivians" had firearms; the Guaraní were limited to spears and knives. Like other native Americans in the north, the Guaraní were also led by a visionary who convinced them that bullets would bounce off them and kill the Bolivian who fired the gun.)
