Héctor and Anastacio are high school seniors this year. They have to live in Monteagudo since none of the local schools go beyond 10th grade, but during the Winter break they came home. Their father, Don Ernesto, promptly put them to work in the fields (here harvesting corn).
After graduating, Héctor will do his compulsory military service. Anastacio already did his (when he was only 16), and hopes to go to college. Only a few Guaraní in the Cañón del Ingre have even graduated from high school: college is virtually unprecedented. Anastacio is a very bright guy(he's had the highest grade average in Monteagudo for the past two years), but it takes more than smarts. Getting into college requires connections and a lot of (very expensive) red tape. We're all rooting for him.
