Don Tojo died in September, 2004. I was no longer living in Imi, but happened to be visiting that week. It was a hard time for everyone; for example, there are practically no children in Imi who are not his great-grandchildren. Death's approach had been pretty obvious and he'd been in bed, slipping fast, for three days. I asked Doña Hilaria if they'd gotten the doctor to come from the hospital in Rosario del Ingre. "No," she said, "Tojo just isn't that kind of person." And a couple hours later he was gone.
