Soybeans were another very successful crop. The first year I tried them I planted less than two pounds of seed, and harvested over 125. It was successful in another way, too. It was one of only a couple (locally) unknown crops that my neighbors were really inspired to try for themselves.
Radell Schrock was a SALT volunteer who visited Imi during a short break from his work in Moro Moro.
A month or so after I took this picture I visited Argentina, and saw their endless fields of "Roundup-Ready" soy. The weedlessness was impressive, but the plants themselves weren't anything like as healthy --or as productive-- as mine. Perhaps a little weed cover is a good thing, helping to retain soil moisture under the burning tropical sun.
